When two or more gather

When two or more gather

Encouraging prayer in a group setting can be facilitated by setting boundaries, being creative with prayer methods, and creating a supportive environment. Briefly explaining how the prayer time will work, particularly what the routine and expectations are, ensures that every has an equal opportunity to contribute.

Set boundaries and structure

Allocate a specific amount of time for gathering prayer requests and sharing prayer.

Starting with one-sentence prayers allows everyone a chance to share and makes the task less daunting for those who are quiet and shy or are new to praying in a group.

To ensure that you remain focussed, encourage prayer for specific needs, avoiding gossip or lengthy discussions.

Maintain a safe and confidential environment where individuals feel comfortable sharing their needs.

Be creative with prayer methods

Incorporate silent prayer time to allow for personal reflection and connection with God.

Divide large groups into smaller breakout groups to foster a more intimate setting.

Ask everyone to write their prayer on a piece of paper and then have them swap with another person who becomes their prayer partner.

Ask everyone to pray on a particular theme, for example: one thing they’re thankful for, one of your church’s ministries, one of your mission partners, a non-believing friend or family member.

Focus prayer time on listening to God instead of us talking. Explain to the group how praying is a conversation with a relational God who cares more about who we are than what we accomplish. Read a Scripture verse and encourage the group members to reflect on it, reminding members to God’s guidance.

Lead by example

When you lead prayer, demonstrate how to pray simply for others and express gratitude. Thank God for each member of the group and express appreciation for their presence.
